Anacaona Band
From Cuba
Tour 2011
Anacaona is composed by twelve women that play the popular
music, fusing the most traditional rhythms with the
contemporaneous Cuban music. They are well-known in Cuba
as “Las Mulatisimas del Sabor” ( The Super Mulatto Women
With Flavor). Nowadays, Anacaona is considered one of the
main symbols of salsa music, not only by the dancers, but also
by the specialists from Cuba and from many other countries
from all over the world. This is because of its acknowledged
and esteemed sonority.
The Orchestra was created by Concepcion Castro and her
sisters : Ada, Alicia, Ondina, Xiomara, Algimira, Emma, Caridad
and Olga. It took place on February 17 th, 1932. In that moment,
it was the first femenine Son sextet. In 1934 , it widens,
becoming into a Jazz Band and Typical Charanga. They had successful performances in a famous stage in that period :
“ Aires Libres del Prado “. Between 1940 and 1960, these brave women traveled the whole American continent - from North to
south-, The Caribbean and France. Mexico was a country visited
again and again by the Orchestra during these years . Anacaona participated in several Mexicain films such as : “ La noche es nuestra”, “ No niego mi pasado” and “Mujeres de teatro”
together with the most popular movie stars and musicians
from that fraternal country.
The followers of these pioneers are two sisters : Georgia and
Dora Aguirre. Both of them, owners of a solid professional
training. They graduated in the respectable “Amadeo Roldan Conservatory” and started working in the Orchestra in 1983.
At that time , some founders of the group were still playing
there and the Aguirre sisters joined them. It was led by Alicia
Castro , who had been the second conductor of the band. This situation gave the new participants in the group , the chance to exchange and receive a lot of wise information and experience,
since they continued working together until December, 1987.
When all the Castro sisters , members of the Orchestra
decided to retire, they put in Georgia Aguirre ´s hands the
baton of the group. She and her sister Dora joined to a selected
group of young graduated women who had finished their studies
in different Schools of Art. They have been able to consolidate
an own style that combines tradition and modern sonority,
keeping the flavor of the past musical golden age, but according
to the present time.
These young sisters have extended to a wide spectrum the
history of Anacaona : an orchestra with more than 75 years of permanent work, that honors the best of
the Cuban national culture.
